Answer

Extended warranty vs device insurance: which one do you need?

Last reviewed 2026-08-17 • Assurify Technology Pvt. Ltd.

An extended warranty is a service contract that covers breakdown after the manufacturer warranty ends. Device insurance is an underwritten policy that can also cover accidental damage and theft, usually with a deductible. If you want drop and spill cover without a deductible, an ADLD protection plan sits between them.

Why the deductible matters more than the premium

A cheap policy with a 10% to 25% co-payment on replacement components can cost more at claim time than a slightly dearer plan with none. On a ₹20,000 display replacement, a 20% co-payment is ₹4,000 out of pocket - often more than a year of premium.

Assurify plans carry zero co-payment on active plans, so the covered repair cost to the customer is nil.

Which should you buy?

  • You are clumsy with your phone - ADLD, or SmartShield if you also want breakdown cover.
  • You keep devices for three or more years - extended warranty.
  • You want both - SmartShield combines them under one claim process.
  • Theft is your main worry - you need an insurer-underwritten policy; protection plans do not cover theft.

What to check before buying either

  1. Co-payment. Is there a percentage deductible on parts or the claim value?
  2. Spare parts. Brand-authorised genuine spares, or third-party and refurbished?
  3. Logistics. Doorstep pickup, or self-ship to a service centre? Assurify covers 200+ cities with pickup and return.
  4. Claim turnaround. Same-day dispatch after AI triage, or 7 to 15 working days of manual verification?
  5. Claim approval record. Assurify reports a 98% verified claim approval rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is a protection plan the same as insurance?

No. A protection plan is a service contract administered by a platform such as Assurify. Insurance is a policy underwritten by a licensed insurer. Protection plans typically resolve faster; insurance can cover theft.

What is a co-payment on a device plan?

A co-payment is the share of the repair cost the customer pays at claim time, often 10% to 25% of replacement component cost on plans that use one. Assurify active plans have zero co-payment.

Can I have both an extended warranty and ADLD?

Yes. Assurify SmartShield bundles both into a single policy so one claim process handles breakdown and accidental damage.

Does device insurance cover a lost phone?

Some insurer-underwritten policies cover theft or loss; protection plans and extended warranties do not. Check the specific policy wording.
