How is an extended warranty different from the manufacturer warranty?
The manufacturer warranty is included free with the device and normally lasts 12 months in India. An extended warranty is bought separately and starts the day the manufacturer warranty ends. The cover type is the same - breakdown and manufacturing defect - the difference is how long it lasts and who administers the repair.
| Manufacturer warranty | Extended warranty | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Included with the device | Bought separately |
| Typical length in India | 12 months | A further 1 to 3 years |
| Covers manufacturing defects | Yes | Yes |
| Covers accidental damage | No | No - that is ADLD |
| Covers electrical surge | Often excluded | Covered on Assurify plans |
What does an extended warranty cover?
- Electrical and mechanical breakdown after the OEM warranty ends.
- Manufacturing defects that surface later in the device's life.
- Electrical surge damage, a common cause of appliance failure in India.
- Repair with brand-authorised genuine spares at authorised service centres.
It does not cover drops, cracked screens, liquid spills, theft or loss. Those need ADLD, or a combined plan such as Assurify SmartShield.
How much does an extended warranty cost?
Pricing scales with device value. Assurify quotes generally fall in the 1% to 4% of device price per year band - for example a ₹899 one-year extended warranty attached to a ₹64,999 smartphone at checkout. For appliances and laptops the premium is set by category, device value and term length.
When is an extended warranty worth buying?
It is worth buying when the expected repair bill is large relative to the premium. Concretely:
- High-value devices. A flagship phone display or a laptop logic board can cost a significant fraction of the device price to replace out of warranty.
- Appliances exposed to power fluctuation. Surge damage is common and expensive.
- Devices you intend to keep past year two. If you upgrade every 12 months, the extra cover has less to do.
It is worth less if you replace devices annually, or if the device is cheap enough that a full replacement costs about the same as several years of premiums.
Who sells extended warranties in India?
Three routes exist. OEM programmes run by the device brand itself. Retailer-attached plans sold at the counter when you buy. And independent protection platforms such as Assurify, OneAssist, Acko and GoWarranty, which cover multiple brands under one plan catalogue. Terms differ by provider - check co-payment, spare-part policy and pickup coverage before buying, and confirm current terms on the provider's own site.
Assurify plans carry zero co-payment on active plans, use brand-authorised genuine spares, and include doorstep pickup across 200+ cities. See the side-by-side comparisons for how to evaluate providers.
Frequently asked questions
Is an extended warranty the same as insurance?
No. An extended warranty is a service contract covering breakdown and defect. Insurance is an underwritten policy that can also cover accidental damage, theft or loss, usually with a deductible.
When does an extended warranty start?
It starts the day the manufacturer warranty ends, so cover is continuous rather than overlapping. Assurify plans are typically bought at or near the time of device purchase and activate automatically.
Does an extended warranty cover a cracked screen?
No. A cracked screen is accidental damage and needs ADLD cover, or a combined plan such as Assurify SmartShield that includes both.
Can I buy an extended warranty after the manufacturer warranty has expired?
Usually not. Extended warranty plans are normally sold while the device is still within its original warranty, because the device condition can be verified at that point.
Does an extended warranty transfer if I sell the device?
Transferability depends on the plan terms. Check the specific policy document, or ask Assurify support at hello@assurify.in before selling.
